TAlley PTO Structure

The Talley PTO is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit run by Talley parents and caregivers with staff representatives on our board. We work to raise $40,000–$73,000 each year to support our students, staff, and school—and we can’t do it without you!

We accept nominations for elected board positions (see list below) during the month of April for elections in May of each year. Terms begin June 1st. We fill any remaining board positions and all committee positions as soon as we have interest - year round.

There are many great ways to get involved in talley’s PTO :

  1. Submit your interest in joining our PTO board. (We are currently in search of a co-president and 3rd grade members-at-large)

  2. Join a year-round committee (list of committees below)

  3. Help chair or plan an event (short-term planning; listed below)

  4. Become a room parent

  5. Volunteer your time (we post all volunteer signups on our social media channels as they become available)

PTO Board Positions (elected, voting members):

  • We have 2 co-presidents elected for staggered 2 year terms.

  • We have 2 co-vice-presidents elected for staggered 2 year terms.

  • We have 2 co-treasurers elected for staggered 2 year terms.

  • We have 1 secretary position with a 1 year, renewable term.

  • We have 1 Communications Lead position with a 1 year, renewable term. This person serves as a voting board member and chair of the communications committee.

  • This voting board member serves as a parent representative for the 3rd grade, and aids the PTO by working on or chairing a committee. This position must be filled by at least 1 person, but may be shared by more.

  • This voting board member serves as a parent representative for the 4th grade, and aids the PTO by working on or chairing a committee. This position must be filled by at least 1 person, but may be shared by more.

  • This voting board member serves as a parent representative for the 5th grade, and aids the PTO by working on or chairing a committee (traditionally this has been the 5th grade bash and graduation ceremony). This position must be filled by at least 1 person, but may be shared by more.

  • Our board accepts appointments of 2-3 teacher representatives per year. These are voting positions.

  • Our board automatically appoints the current school principal as a voting member each year.

PTO year-round Committee Chair and member positions (appointed):

  • The lead is the elected communications board member. This team consists of 4 other positions:

    • Eblast editor

    • Website manager

    • Social media manager

    • Graphic creator

  • This committee is led by the yearbook chair with 1-2 additional people who manage the production and sales of our yearbook with sign off from the board and school admin.

  • This committee is made up of a team of volunteers who manage designing our t-shirts and new merch, manage our inventory and sales, update our points-of-sale and webstore (with treasurers and communications team), and fulfill orders.

  • This is an active committee with at least 3 co-chairs. They manage our room parents (recruiting, training, and oversight), the Talley teacher fund (annual pooling of class funds), and organize staff appreciation week. They work closely with the Staff Appreciation Committee.

  • This committee manages the care and appreciation of non-classroom staff who don’t have room parents. This committee celebrates their birthdays, holiday gifting, and end-of-school-year gifting. They work closely with the Room Parent Coordinators throughout the year and with Staff Appreciation Week in May.

  • This is a committee of volunteers who work closely with Talley’s Media center to organize the True Book Fair. This often involves communication between the PTO and media center, volunteering in the library, and hosting fundraisers for the media center and True Book Fair.

  • This is a committee led by 1-2 Co-chairs who manage the Talley garden, its programming, and volunteers.

  • This committee is usually a team of 3 people who oversee the following:

    • serve as liaisons to the district SRTS team- a partnership between CSD and Decatur Police

    • organize all Walk and Rolls

    • manage School Bus Driver and Crossing Guard appreciation events

    • serve as liasons between the PTO and Talley’s crossing guards and bus drivers

    • manage the walking School Bus

    • manage the Bike Bus

  • This committee monitors our passive fundraising programs and searches for new opportunities.

  • This team works alongside Talley’s Staff Diversity and Activities Committee for in- and out- of school DEI events and programming.

  • This committee helps the school manage lost clothing and belongings by organizing items, returning labeled items, and facilitating the donation of unclaimed items.

  • This committee is tasked with answering requests made to the PTO by Talley teachers and staff for funding.

  • Do you love our mascot Titan? DO you wish you could be Titan? We need several ‘Titans’ to appear at events during the year. Help us care for the costume, play our amazing mascot, and be “handlers” to escort him around.

  • Chair our sponsorship program by maintaining sponsor relationships, finding new sponsors, and managing the fulfillment or marketing agreements. This position is most active over the summer.

(Some ) Events that require a committee:

  • Usually the 1st Saturday after school starts every year. This committee is active over the summer to plan this community-building event.

  • This committee plans a staff back-to-school luncheon, manages distributon of school supplies to classrooms, and plans for a PTO information table and spiritwear sales at the Meet & Greet.

  • Sorting Day usually happens the first Friday of every new school year. This committee manages the PTO side of sorting day- our single largest volunteer effort every year. Help behind the scenes to bring this favorite day to fruition.

  • This is the PTO’s 2nd largest fundraiser by dollars, and a really fun, all-school reading event. Over the course of a week we help hype reading, and manage every piece of the fundraiser- planning, communications, printing, prizes, announcements, and more.

  • Communities in Schools hosts a literacy-themed trunk-or-treat event each year around Halloween. PTO helps with some of the planning and communications to families.

  • The CSD Nutrition department hosts a Thanksgiving luncheon each year. PTO helps manage volunteers, communication, and people traffic during the event.

  • Talley hosts an annual family STEM night. Ms. Reno, our amazing STEM teacher, organizes this event, we just help out with volunteers where she needs them!

  • The house system staff organize this annual family trivia night. PTO supports where needed with volunteers and concessions sales.

  • The amazing Talley house staff organize this dance every year. We just assist with volunteers where needed!

  • Dr. Muhlhausen organizes this annual evening event. We just assist with volunteers!

  • This is PTO’s largest annual event- by scale, attendance, volunteers, and funds raised. We need lots of committee help for planning and execution- games, auction, ticketing, concessions, logistics, communications, raffle, prizes, volunteer management, and more.

  • This week falls on the same week in May as the national Teacher and Staff appreciation week. The PTO’s room parent coordinators and staff appreciation committees work together to provide a week of food, activities, and appreciation to our wonderful staff.

  • The PTO - usually the 5th grade members at large - organize this event in conjunction with the 5th grade staff as a last-hoorah for the 5th graders. It happens during the last week of school each year, and we affectionately refer to it as mini-Tigerfest.

  • PTO assists the school staff and 5th grade team with decor and volunteers for the 5th grade moving forth ceremonies which happen on the last day of school each year.

  • Talley is unique and lucky in that we have a dedicated group of staff members - the Diversity and Activities Committee (DAC) - who lead the charge in organizing many of the DEI events, lessons, activities, and displays both in and outside of school. The PTO’s DEI committee works alongside them to provide PTO volunteer and financial support where needed.

  • The Talley house staff organize an annual family BINGO night. PTO helps with volunteers and concessions.

  • There are always new clubs, initiatives, and ideas that need support from the Talley community. The PTO is proud to step in and fill gaps through the year.
